Choosing the right MDM solution

Organisations that rely on fleets of mobile devices for performing daily operations will know how complex it can be to keep each device secure. Besides protecting each device from viruses or malware, there is the risk of sensitive information being lost or accessed by unauthorised personnel in cases where the device is misplaced or stolen.

If that’s not already a sizable task to manage on its own, add to the mix the endless variations in device types and operating systems and you can understand why some businesses end up doing nothing largely through complexity paralyses. Taking these issues into account, here are five tips for any business looking to implement an MDM solution.

1. Extensive, comprehensive security

This doesn’t just mean using a comprehensive anti-virus or firewall (though they should certainly be considered). Security refers to any number of options that a business may require for their mobile fleet, for example, the ability to remote wipe a device that is lost, or the ability to track a device that is stolen, or even the ability to restrict company files from being emailed to users on different email domains.

2. Covering everything the light touches…

Android, Windows Phone, iOS, Blackberry, all kinds of strange foreign imports – chances are unless your company allocates devices, your team will have every variation of mobile device imaginable. The MDM solution you choose to implement needs to be able to cater to these variations, so conducting a mobile audit prior to choosing your MDM solution is a good idea. It also needs to come with some level of assurance that future upgrades and developments will keep up with the rate of change amongst mobile devices.

3. Light-weight and subtle

Your team isn’t going to be too thrilled if you insist they load company software onto their device only to find the performance of their device deteriorates. The MDM solution you go for must be light-weight enough that the user isn’t inhibited in any way (or at least as minimally as possible) but still robust enough to protect your business and the device.

4. Easy to do business with

There is nothing more frustrating than implementing a you-beaute new system that works amazingly when first setup, but becomes complicated and tiresome to use as business grows.

Whichever MDM platform you choose, it not only needs to embrace growth, but be able to do so with minimal impact on your business. If your business undergoes a sudden growth spurt and you appoint 10 new team members in the space of a few days, getting them into the system quickly and painlessly is essential to ensure that you can begin to see the return on investment of those employees.

5. Different shoes for different feet

It is unlikely that a one-size-fits-all approach will work for every business. The CEO for example will likely want or need greater privileges than other team members as they will be dealing more in sensitive material and perhaps more frequently with external parties. A robust reliable MDM solution needs to be able to provide different profiles if and when required to ensure that team members performance is not compromised by a lack of flexibility.

MDM solutions have evolved significantly since their arrival in the early 2000’s. Thankfully, the platforms that are now available to businesses are a lot more sophisticated than they were back then, and the complications and frustrations that comes with early releases are thankfully, in most cases, a thing of the past.
